From the moment I could dress myself, I always remember squeezing into an XL at the most teen-friendly store in the mall, which is where all my skinny friends shop. My mom would take me to plus size clothing stores, but when I was 13, the clothes in those stores seemed too housewife or out of touch with my personal style. So I stuck with size XL until 2013, when brands started making cute and trendy clothes for plus size women. This is largely due to the widespread acceptance and expansion of the fat acceptance movement, with plus-size women demanding equality and visibility in the fashion industry.

How Do I Know If I Am Plus Size?

While there are all kinds of trendy plus-size clothing for curvy women today, I know plenty of young girls who are still squeezing into an X-Large. Whether it's because they don't want to call themselves "plus-size," or they simply don't know there are clothes made specifically for their body, wearing clothes that don't fit can lead to low self-esteem and a drop in confidence levels.

So how do you know if you're plus size? A Google search classifies anyone who wears a size 14 and up as a plus size. And, according to a Google search, that's the average American woman! Most American women are a size 16 or 18, which is why it's so surprising to learn that most clothing companies don't carry plus sizes.

Embracing the Term ‘Plus Size’

But identifying as being plus size may not be as black and white as the number on the tag of your favorite pair of jeans. The terms “plus size, curvy, fat or full-figured” have carried a negative stigma for as long as they have existed. This is for the simple fact that the thin figure and body image has been upheld by society as the ideal, healthy body that everyone should strive to achieve. While larger bodies have been deemed lazy, unhealthy and undesirable. However, these stereotypes are inaccurate. And now, more than ever, we are seeing more women and men sharing their personal stories about being plus size and breaking the boundaries of these misconceptions.

While some women may choose to stay away from plus size clothing so that they aren’t associated with the term, many women are embracing their figure and beginning to wear clothing that fits them–and, most importantly, makes them feel good.

Discovering Self-Love Through Plus-Size Clothing

Once I knew I was actually a size 18 or 2X, I started buying clothes in those sizes, and in turn, I learned to love my body, which I've battled my whole life. Wearing well-fitting clothes makes me feel confident and beautiful, and it ultimately tells me that the number on the label is just that—a number that no one really cares about. At the end of the day, you should be able to feel comfortable, confident and special. When I claimed the word "plus size," a world of new opportunities opened up to me, and I fell in love with my body!

One of my favorite places to shop is LUCKY PLUS SIZE because they create the perfect balance between comfort and style. I know that no matter what I buy from LUCKY PLUS SIZEl, I will get an outfit that I can confidently wear all day. When I look in the mirror, I feel self-love. My favorite LUCKY PLUS SIZE items are the robes because they are buttery soft and super stretchy for my skin and curves. Plus size swimwear fits me perfectly too! I also love their plus size babydoll dresses because they break all the style rules fashion has set for plus size women, and I'm always challenging convention and creating my own style.

If you haven't embraced the word "plus size" go boldly into this space and you'll find how much your body will love you for not shrinking it by wearing clothes that aren't made of your unique mind curve! It's such a great feeling when you notice more confidence exuding when you're wearing well-fitting clothes!
