Quick question: What time of year is it right now? For me, “fall” would probably be the first thing to come to mind, but there are several other perfectly acceptable responses: autumn, October, Halloween, perhaps Q4, if you swing that way.

I would even begrudgingly take cuffing season. Just about any answer would by fine by me except for one: “spooky season.”

Why do we need ghost season?
Besides having a lot to do, I have a few reasons why I need a horror season.

It gives us a universally agreed upon time frame for celebrations.
By definition, Halloween is a day, but by giving it a season, Halloween lovers extend the time frame in which they can enjoy their favorite holiday and its associated activities. By giving it a name, we are creating a new social fabric and making it understand that this idea is not just something a few people like. Is this a group, a community, dare I even say... a movement?

It provides a place for Halloween lovers to belong.
One of the things I've noticed with Halloween lovers is that most of us feel like the misfits, outcasts, weirdos in the world. Halloween gives us a place to belong. It's the only time of year when it's okay to be weird and different because... everything is weird and different during the season of horror.

If you feel that way, don't you want to feel that way for more than a day? There's a reason why quotes about building a Halloween routine are so popular.

It brings happiness to people.
Look, we've had a few years in a global pandemic. If we haven't learned by now that life is precious and we should do the things that bring us joy...I don't think we'll learn that lesson at all.

But for me, seeking happiness as long as I can find it in my life is something I'm now pursuing quite often. If it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone else...why does it matter? embrace it. enjoy it. Celebrate.

It makes one believe in the magic inside of you.
There's more to the love of Halloween than enjoying jack-o'-lanterns, candy, or scaring people. It's about a visceral feeling that only happens at certain times of the year. You can chase it in other months, but there's something special about September and October that makes it burn brighter. December has what you might call a festive mood. In October, we call it Halloween Spirit.

The spooky season is the time to let that spirit shine, to feel it fully and to revel in it. It's the indescribable feeling that true season lovers feel inside, a feeling that cannot be replicated at any other time of year. This is magic.

That's what season of horror is all about.
You don't have to agree with me. At the end of the day, horror season is a social construct, like a holiday. It exists only because we say it exists. If you don't like it or don't like it, there are plenty of other things in this world that I'm sure you do like that you can take the time to do.

But for me, that event is Halloween.

Happy ghost season if you enjoyed it too.

Until a few weeks ago, I didn’t know what spooky season was (and my life was arguably better for it). If I saw the combination of words spooky season, I would have been able to gather that it referred to Halloween, but I also would have thought it was the sort of unremarkable alliterative phrase a bunch of people might have arrived at independently, perhaps because they were decorating a bulletin board in an elementary school or needed an Instagram caption but considered themselves too special to say something normal like “Happy Halloween!”

But first let's talk about the holidays
I'll start here, because that seems to me the easiest to compare: We refer to the time between Thanksgiving and December 25th as the "holiday season."

But Christmas is a single day.

Why a day a season?

Well... I think it's because there are plenty of other activities to enjoy in the period leading up to December 25th, such as:

buy gifts
home decoration
Visit a Christmas tree farm and choose a Christmas tree
Send holiday cards to friends and family
Going to a holiday party (for work! for school! for family! for friends! whatever!)
watch tv specials
watch holiday movies
Bake Holiday Cookies
Participate in the on-site Christmas tree lighting ceremony
You can't possibly fit it all into a day, hence the season.

Now, let's be honest: vacations are a social construct. It exists only because we as a society say or believe it exists. (Well, maybe with a little marketing magic, too.)

But does that make it any less fun? Does this mean that time spent with family or friends is less valuable?

Absolutely not.

What is Ghost Season?
Here's the reality Christmas lovers hate to admit: The winter holidays don't resonate with everyone.

It doesn't matter! That's part of what makes the world interesting.

Some of us prefer to celebrate Halloween more than any other holiday of the year. This is where we feel at home. We love the glow of a jack-o-lantern, the screams of a haunted house, and the chill of an autumn night.

It is also not feasible to want to enjoy all these things in one day.

Halloween has also become a season that blurs the lines between outright Halloween events and traditional fall events. This season is less associated with religious holidays or family traditions and more focused on genuine fun, silliness, and the enjoyment of life.

In fall, you might enjoy the following things:

Finding the First Pumpkins of the Season
Visit the Spirit Halloween Store
check haunted house
Make a Halloween Costume
Get lost in a local corn maze/pumpkin patch
Take a Drive to Admire the Fall Colors
Host a Bonfire on the First Cool Nights of Autumn
carved pumpkin
watching horror movies
Bake a Halloween or Pumpkin Dessert
you understood. Lots of activity until October 31st.

It's a spooky season, my friends: it's that time of year (we'll end up calling it September and October) when you enjoy fall, Halloween, and all your favorite things.
